While writing my book on Lady Washington, I came across several members of her crew that especially
caught my attention. Of course, at first, I found Kendrick rather fascinating, but as I was looking into Haswell's
history I noticed there wasn't really much available. Most of those I talked to about him were either disgusted
with him or looked puzzled for a moment, then responded with "wasn't he the one who drew that picture or
something?"
The crux of the matter came when I was writing my thesis and had a picture of Haswell open on my screen since
that was the page I was working on. One of the girls in the class walked by, paused, then remarked "he's cute!
What movie was that?" at which point I knew something had to be done about it. Portraits of other historical figures
are instantly recognized by the general public, but they walked by Haswell thinking he was some sort of movie
actor in a costume. It is time that was changed and he receives the recognition he deserves, not just as the bloke
who wrote "that journal".
